Registered Nurse Registration Information

The requirements to work in the United States as a RN are quite straight forward:

  • Completion of a three year registered nursing program (theory and clinical experience within Surgical, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Psychiatry & Medicine)
  • Current registration within your home country
  • Possess a minimum of one year post registered or post graduate clinical experience
  • Ability to articulate and comprehend clear concise English

Every U.S State has a Board of Nursing. To be able to sit for the registering examination (NCLEX RN) every candidate must meet all of the eligibility requirements set by the relevant State Board of Nursing. Every State has a separate credential verification requirement; we are able advise you as to which State would be the most beneficial to register with initially.

There are significant benefits to registering with RSW as we are constantly updated with all the different State Board requirements. We can therefore advise you which Board of Nursing best suits your individual needs.

Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) examination program.

It is no longer a requirement to sit the CGFNS exam for registration in the U.S. However, it may be a requirement to complete CGFNS verification or credentialing, to enable you to sit the NCLEX RN.

If you carried out your nurse training in a country where English is not the first language, you will be required to take an English language exam. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the testing system that we recommend. It must be the academic module, not the general module of testing that you complete. This examination is held in several locations around the world. For more information on specific locations and current costs, please visit http://www.ielts.org

U.S. immigration law now requires that nurses complete a screening program. Once approved for your visa, you will need a Visa Screen Certificate to present at your Consulate Interview.

To obtain a VisaScreen certificate the following IELTS scores are required:

  • Overall - 6.5 or above
  • Speaking - 7.0 or above.

The only exemption to the IELTS requirement is for those nurses whose nursing education was in one of the following English speaking countries: US, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.
